WAXAHACHIE — After its recent move to the downtown square, the Ellis County Art Association opened the doors to Art on the Square at the new location Saturday, Oct. 1.
Painter and six-year ECAA member, Olivette Hubler is one of the many members who volunteer their time twice a month working the gallery and art course teacher.
“I’m from Dallas and I drive to Waxahachie. The pretty downtown square drew me in,” Hubler said.
Six of Hubler’s oil paintings of various locations and happenings in Waxahachie can be found in the new gallery.
“I love that the new location is right on the square where people wander by and the view of the courthouse from the gallery is beautiful,” Hubler said. “At our previous location, nobody just dropped by. We’ve had a nice influx of visitors.”
Because of the new and improved classroom, Hubler, along with President of the ECAA Tina Bohlman, and many other artists have started teaching new art courses offered to all age groups.
“Tammy Wascovich, an artist whose paintings are currently displayed at the gallery, offers a very different class. She’s teaching a printmaking workshop where students learn linoleum block cutting to apply on a t-shirt,” Hubler said.
Classes range from children’s painting to sketchbook drawing to a “Start & Finish” course.
“We are hosting our first annual Art on the Square Members Show beginning Nov. 19 through Jan. 2017,” Hubler shared. “Most of our members paint continuously. The majority of the paintings on display now were painted at the Waxahachie Paint Out which was through the month of May.”
At the end of November, the ECAA members will swap these paintings out for works that the artists have completed throughout the year.
