GANZHOU, China (AP) — China has rebuffed calls for the release of three activists detained while investigating a company that produced shoes for Ivanka Trump and other brands.
Instead, authorities are seeking to silence family members and lawyers, pressuring them with interrogations and warnings not to speak with foreign media.
Deng Guilian, the wife of one of the detainees, told The Associated Press on Tuesday she felt she was "going to collapse" after two police interrogations in her hometown in central China's Hubei province.
The activists worked for China Labor Watch, a New York-based nonprofit organization. The company they were investigating, Huajian Group, denies allegations of excessive overtime and low wages and says it no longer makes Ivanka Trump products.
