As part of the 2008 Luminant Scholar Program, Hunter Burney of Glen Rose Intermediate received a $1,000 United States Savings Bond during a school presentation and was recognized at the school board meeting on Dec. 15.

Fellow students, teachers and a Luminant representative gathered to honor Austin for writing the essay that best answered the question, “How can I help protect the environment?”

Burney’s essay was titled “Too Much Garbage.” It addressed how children could help conserve landfill space by recycling and composting leftover food.

The Luminant Scholar Program is a new program designed to increase awareness of environmental protection among elementary students across Texas. As part of the program, Luminant will award up to $50,000 in scholarships and grants this fall, including a $5,000 grant to three schools representing the best essays from the contest.
