Mario Rudy Vara, 26, of Walnut Springs, was sentenced to 10 years in a state penitentiary, probated for 10, after pleading guilty to aggravated assault with serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony, in the 266th Judicial District Court.
Vara was arrested at the Larry Joe Taylor Music Festival in April 2009 and indicted by a grand jury in November for assaulting James Harrell Lamance, Jr., of Boyd, who was airlifted to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth after sustaining severe head injuries during the fight. Lamance sustained head trauma, including a broken left eye socket and orbital bones, broken nasal and sinus passages and a broken jaw.
Judge Donald Jones said in addition to adhering to the strict terms of his decade-long probation, Vara would be required to spend 90 days in the Erath County Jail, pay more than $29,000 in restitution to his victim, plus fines and fees and perform community service.
Vara faced similar charges in 2003 when records show he pleaded no contest to assault charges in Meridian.
