Somervell County commissioners began their search Monday for members of the board of directors for the hospital authority.
Commissioners began pursuing the option of a hospital district in late August after a letter from the Glen Rose Medical Foundation Board recommended “the re-establishment of the Somervell Healthcare Authority and the transfer of the lease to this governmental organization.”
The letter cited an increase in bad debts, departure of three primary care physicians and the growing number of uninsured and underinsured residents as its main motivating factors for requesting the hospital authority.
Glen Rose Medical Foundation has been a non-profit organization for six years and began suffering losses during the 2008 fiscal year, which were recorded at approximately $800,000.
During Monday’s special meeting, commissioners authorized advertisements for board candidates to be placed in local newspapers.
Applicants are required to submit the completed information to the county clerk’s office by Oct. 5. Commissioners stated they want to appoint the board members during their Oct. 13 regular meeting.
