In a statement issued Jan. 14, Senator Kip Averitt announced he would not seek re-election, citing health reasons.
“As many of you know, my health has been significantly challenged in recent years, and I have fought hard to strike a balance between my health, my family and my public service,” Averitt said. “However, I have been advised that I must now put my health above all else - for me and my family - and it is with deep regret that I announce today the cessation from my Senate campaign.”
Averitt, a Republican from Waco, has served District 22 since 2002.
“While I will not serve another term, serving my friends and neighbors has been my highest honor and greatest privilege, and I am proud of all that we’ve accomplished together,” Averitt said. “Wherever life takes me next, I will do all I can to continue supporting our shared initiatives and bettering life for Senate District 22.”
District 22 includes McLennan, Bosque, Coryell, Ellis, Falls, Hill, Hood, Johnson, Navarro and Somervell counties.
