Get ready to enter your daughter or son in the patriotic pageant, your best apple pie, your costumed pooch or your decorated bicycle in the July 4 extravaganza sponsored by the Glen Rose/Somervell County Chamber of Commerce.
Because the holiday falls on Sunday this year, the day-long celebration will be held Saturday, July 3.
The age divisions for the patriotic pageant are: Baby Miss Sparkler/Baby Mister Firecracker, 12 to 35 months; Tiny Miss Sparkler, Tiny Mister Firecracker, 3 to 4 years; Mini Miss Sparkler/Mini Mister Firecracker, 6 to 8; Little Miss Sparkler, 9 to 12; Junior Miss Sparkler, 13 to 15; and Miss Sparkler, 16 to 18.
Each contestant should dress in festive patriotic clothing. Judging will be based on patriotic appearance, poise and personality. Starting with the Mini Miss/Mister category, contestants also will be asked to answer a question.
Entry forms are available at the chamber office downtown, 112 Walnut St. The fee is $10. The deadline to receive the form is Sunday, June 20, at 12 p.m. The registration fee after the deadline goes up to $20.
For forms, contest information and questions, please contact Angelica Smith at 897-0543, the chamber at 897-2286 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
An “All American Apple Pie Contest” also will be open to the public for amateur bakers. All pies must have homemade crust and filling. No tarts or crisps will be accepted. Bakers are asked to use an aluminum pie plate for a nine-inch pie.
The recipe may be your own or your favorite. Include a copy of the recipe to be turned into the judges.
Drop off your pies at the chamber office no later than 3 p.m. Friday, July 2.
The pie contest entry fee is $5. Entry forms and fees must be submitted to the chamber no later than Thursday, July 1. Winners must agree to have their recipe, name and pie photographed and published.
For the “Patriotic Pooch Parade,” dress up your dog in patriotic regalia. The entry deadline is June 26 and the fee is $5 and $10 for late entries.
Proceeds benefit the Glen Rose Animal Control facility.
June 26 also is the deadline for entry forms for the “Most Patriotic Bicycle Decorating Contest,” open to participants of all ages.
Judging by Stumpblaster Bicycles will be based on patriotic theme, creativity, style and originality. Awards will be given for first, second and third place. Winners will be recognized during the Parade Awards Ceremony.
There's no entry fee for this contest.
Please let the chamber know if you or your organization want to enter a float in the main parade. In addition, vendor spaces are available and will cost $40 and $50 with power.
