Glen Rose has its share of good restaurants. Sometimes, though, it’s fun to take a short drive and try someplace new.

Add delicious food, reasonable prices and a delightful lakeside view to the mix and you get Stumpy’s Lakeside Grill.

Located at the Lake Granbury Marina on State Highway 144 – Stumpy’s is a short 15-minute drive away.

The menu ranges from seafood tacos to po’boy sandwiches to burgers and salads. Everything on the menu is under $10. Diners order at the counter and pick it up at the kitchen window.

My dining companion and I started with some chips and salsa. Diners can help themselves to the chips from a big covered bin and choose from two kinds of salsa – one regular or one with roasted peppers – or try both. The chips were thin and crispy and the salsas tasted fresh made.

On a hot day, I was in the mood for something cool and ordered the house salad ($6.99). A large platter was covered with fresh mixed greens, dried cranberries, thinly sliced red onions, walnuts, shaved Parmesan cheese and a drizzle of sweet and tangy pomegranate-balsamic vinaigrette.

I added grilled shrimp ($3 for three, although they gave me six), which was seasoned and cooked just to the point of succulent tenderness. Grilled chicken is an extra $2.

My companion chose fish tacos ($6.99). A basket held three of the tacos, which contained a lightly fried fillet of fish with melted cheese, a cabbage slaw and thin slices of jalapenos. Served with a chile-infused tartar sauce on the side, the fish tacos were some of the best ones we’ve had in recent memory.

Stumpy’s burgers are made with a half-pound patty of fresh Angus beef ($5.49 for the regular, $6.99 for a double-meat burger and $8.49 for a “triple bypass.” A bar with condiments, sliced tomatoes, onions and pickles allows diners to “build your own burger.”

In addition to regular French fries ($1.99), Stumpy’s offers sweet potato fries ($2.49). Other sides include onion rings ($2.99) and hush puppies ($1.49).

This is a family-friendly place with a children’s menu featuring corn dogs ($2.99), chicken tenders ($3.49), popcorn shrimp ($4.99) and a grilled cheese sandwich ($2.99).

The food is reason enough to visit Stumpy’s, but the view makes it well worth the trip. Diners have a choice of the air-conditioned main dining room, a side room with walls of windows overlooking the marina or outdoor seating under colored umbrellas on big decks. The casual décor has a nautical theme, but isn’t overdone.

We ate on a dock-like protrusion that jutted into the marina. It was covered and, with the breeze off the lake, felt very comfortable. Tables also are set up in a gazebo off the main deck.

The great food, breezy atmosphere and lovely lakeside setting, plus prices that don’t throw the wallet overboard, make Stumpy’s a fun place where summer never ends. It’s open  from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday; 2323 S. Morgan St. (Highway 144); 817-279-1000;  HYPERLINK ""
