Nothing says springtime like enjoying the great outdoors, and nothing soothes the soul like family traditions. Both are coming together at Oakdale Park this weekend.

The park will play host to the Second Annual Spring Bluegrass Festival today through Saturday, April 4-6.

“Bluegrass has a rich history in Glen Rose and Oakdale Park that continues still to this day,” Tara Janszen, special events coordinator for the city, said.

The three-day lineup will bring American roots music to music lovers of all ages and offer community members and visitors a family friendly event.

Paluxy River Bluegrass Association helps organize the festival, and association member Frank Simurdak said the music, with its heavy ties to Gospel, and the alcohol-free venue bring together a safe environment for generations of listeners.

“It’s a good, wholesome experience,” Simurdak said.

The fiddle, upright bass, banjo and guitar combine with the melodic tunes of bluegrass as a lineup, including Louisiana Grass, Jimmy Allison & The Ozark Ramblers, 3rd Generation, Bluefield Express, Salt Creek, Jeff Scroggins & Colorado, Quality Time, Copper Canyon and Bluegrass Gospel Tradition takes the stage.

While Oakdale Park will host the event, the park has no camping vacancies during the festival.

“Our bluegrass events not only fill Oakdale, they also overflow into other RV parks and hotels across the city,” Janszen added. “The spring and fall bluegrass festivals are great assets that also benefit other area businesses.”

While accommodations are full, there is room for music lovers who simply want to sit back and enjoy the sound.

Admission is $15 today, $20 each for Friday and Saturday and $40 for a three-day pass.

Meanwhile, bluegrass lovers are also encouraged to join the Paluxy River Bluegrass Association for free monthly jam sessions on the third Saturday of every month — the next will be held April 19 — at Oakdale Park.

Simurdak said as many as 100 musicians turn out for the monthly event, which begins at 3 p.m. followed by stage show that evening.
