Special to The Reporter
On Saturday, Nov. 21, join the Dallas Trekkers for a rare hike into the untamed wilderness of Fossil Rim Wildlife Center and High Hope Ranch. Participants can choose from a 5K, 10K or 12K hike through wooded, hilly and semi-rocky terrain near Glen Rose, the gateway to the Texas Hill Country.
The Dallas Trekkers and Fossil Rim Wildlife Center each celebrate special birthdays this year. The Dallas Trekkers, a Dallas-based walking club and a member of the American Volkssport Association, celebrates 30 years of walking. Established in 1979, the Dallas Trekkers exist to promote non-competitive walking by hosting walking events in or near the city. To celebrate this milestone, it chose to team up with Fossil Rim Wildlife Center which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. In 1984, Fossil Rim opened its nine-and-a-half mile drive to the public and since has remained a favorite spot for introducing families to the beauty of nature and an understanding of their roll in protecting wildlife.
High Hope Ranch, LLC, is a privately owned ranch adjoining Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. It was purchased over time by the visionary and previous owner of Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, as a buffer zone to shield Fossil Rim animals and visitors from roads and intrusions that could break the beauty and serenity of a very special sanctuary. This ranch too, is a peaceful sanctuary with lovely trails, views and a dedication to caring for the land and all its creatures, plants and visitors.
The hike begins at Fossil Rim - Overlook Entrance, 1789 CR 2009, Glen Rose. Volunteers will direct participants to their designated parking area. The start table will be near the Children’s Animal Center, featuring goats, emu, parrots and tortoises. Participants may begin their hike between 8-10 a.m. and must be off the trail by 2:30 p.m. Hiking boots and a hiking stick are strongly encouraged, as well as a supply of water. Not pets are allowed. The cost is $8 and includes the park use fee and walk fee.
As a special treat, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is offering a guided bus tour to meet some of its animals. Tours last approximately one-and-a-half to two hours. The cost is $25. Space may be reserved by calling 254-897-2960. Participants must identify themselves as being with the Dallas Trekkers. The bus will leave at approximately 3 p.m. from the Overlook parking lot.
