SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Vaqueros were a team trying to begin the district on the right foot.

They achieved just Friday night beating Santa Rosa 39-14, and it was all thanks to a trio of big-time plays on special teams and defense.

The Vaqueros scored first on a two-yard fumble return by Rene Corona.

In the second quarter after Santa Rosa’s first score of the game, Ralph Saenz returned the ensuing kickoff 70 yards for a score.

Later in the fourth quarter, the Vaqueros scored on a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown by Ryan Briones.

• Freer High School quarterback Librado Carrillo rushed for 484 yards and 10 touchdowns on 18 carries in the Buckaroos 86-61 win against Three Rivers.

• Alice quarterback Andres Barrios had a solid night against Miller. He was 11 of 19 for 211 passing yards. He also carried the ball eight times for 16 yards. He carried the ball into the end zone twice and threw two touchdown passes.
