The Glen Rose High School girls and boys tennis players opened their spring schedule recently, competing in the Rocket Invitational hosted by Waco Robinson High School, then last week battling in the Iredell Invitational.
Harrison Hawkins of GRHS won the Division 1 boys singles title in the Rocket Invitational. He defeated his first two foes, from Gatesville and Taylor, 8-0. Harrison then won the semifinal round over Liberty Hill, 8-6, before securing the title with a 9-8 (8-6) victory over a Burleson player in the final.
Other highlights from the Feb. 9 match in Waco include:
The GRHS Division 1 mixed doubles team of Briley Green and Logan Smith won three matches and lost two in the tournament, beating teams from Palestine, Waco High and Irving McArthur, and falling to Plainview and China Spring.
Emma Bozarth and Annie Bryant, competing in Division 1 girls doubles, were 2-2. They defeated foes from Waco University High and San Saba. Their losses were to Irving McArthur and Liberty Hill.
In Division 2 mixed doubles, Harlie Thompson and Carson Osborne also were 2-2. They beat Waco University and Robinson, and lost to Plainview and Groesbeck.
That tournament included 19 teams, 15 of which were Class 4A through 6A.
In the Iredell tournament on Feb. 15, Bozarth and Bryant won the championship in the A Division girls doubles with a 4-0 mark. They defeated teams from Martin’s Mill, Gatesville, Whitney and Gatesville.
Natalie Lacey earned second place in the A Division girls singles. She overcame players from Itasca, McGregor and China Spring, before falling to an Iredell player in the final.
Green and Smith teamed to take second place in the A Division mixed doubles. They defeated Martin’s Mill and Gatesville, but lost in the title match to a different Gatesville duo.
Second place in the B Division girls doubles bracket, GRHS got second place with the team of London Bulliner and Shelby Simpson. They beat teams from China Spring, Wortham, Mount Calm before also taking down their GRHS teammates Abby Payne and Laney Whitefield in the semifinals. Bulliner and Simpson then lost in the final to Palmer. Payne and Whitefield earned third place, after beating Whitney, Itasca, Moody and the GRHS team of Quinlan and Whitfield.
In A Division boys doubles, the GRHS team of Carson Osborne and Ty Smith took home third place. They defeated Bruceville-Eddy and Moody, before losing to Gatesville in the semifinals.
