Three members of the Glen Rose High School boys powerlifting team qualified for the Class 4A state meet with their performances last Saturday at the regional Texas High School Powerlifting Association meet held in Smithville.

Dillon Graves won his division, while Nic Lara qualified as the runner-up in his weight class. Also, Briley Green made it by reaching the automatic qualifying total in his class.

The three Tigers qualifiers will compete on March 24 at the state meet, to be held in the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.

Teammate Hayden Shaw medaled, taking fourth place in his division.

GRHS coach Terry Harlin explained that the lifters could qualify for the state meet by either finishing first or second in their weight class, or by reaching a predetermined automatic qualifying total.

The other Tigers who qualified for regional and competed in Smithville were Max Lauderdale, Tanner Stroud and Zach Powell.

Harlin said it was a great day for the Tigers.

“Briley, Dillon, Nic, and Hayden also all broke at least one school record in their respective weight classes,” Harlin said. “As a team, we placed fifth overall. We tied for fourth, but Hillsboro had one more first-place finish than us. We were only one point out of third place and a team trophy, and eight points behind first-place team champion Lampasas.

“All of our regional qualifiers competed and represented our school and community very well with all of our lifters either topping or matching their best lifts of the year.”

Harlin said the state qualifiers are looking forward to the preparation time leading up to the Abilene triop, as well as competing on “the biggest stage.”

“Coach (co-coach Casey) Alexander and I excited for these kids because all of their hard-work, determination, and perseverance has paid huge dividends and we hope they are able carry that over into their adult lives,” Harlin added.

Graves established school records in the 132-pound class for squat (425 pounds lifted), bench press (270 pounds), and total lifted (1,155 pounds).
