Glen Rose didn’t make it into the championship bracket at the Texas State 7on7 Organization's Division II state football tournament in College Station last week, losing two of three games in pool play on June 28.
The Tigers, competing in Pool J that Thursday, lost to Celina 39-27, and then fell to Houston Worthing 33-26. Glen Rose then defeated Mexia 41-33 later that day. The pool play qualifiers advanced to Friday's championship bracket in the 48-team Division II field.
Glen Rose was able to play one more game the following day, Friday, June 29, in the consolidation bracket. The Tigers lost that matchup to Waco La Vega.
Worthing ended up winning the consolidation bracket.
David Halcom and Jerry Gilbreath were the volunteer coaches for Glen Rose. The Glen Rose High School head football coach is Cliff Watkins, but the school coaches are not allowed to coach in summer league play.
“Basically, they (the Tigers) all played really well, especially the last game Thursday against Mexia,” Halcom said. “It was the first win Glen Rose has had (in the state 7 on 7 tournament) in four years.
“I think our defense really held us together. We struggled with scoring. The defense really kept us in games.”
Halcom said that the leading scorers in the tournament for Glen Rose were Brady Taylor, Westen Halcom, Jess Niedziela and Austin Worthen. Cam Griffin played quarterback for the Tigers.
