The Tarleton State University football squad, coming off a 6-6 season, is predicted by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine to finish sixth in 2018 in the Lone Star Conference.

Head coach Todd Whitten’s Texans were 4-4 in NCAA Division II LSC play in Whitten’s second season since his return to the head coaching job. They closed out the regular season at 6-5 for their first winning regular-season mark since 2013.

The Texans qualified for the inaugural Corsicana Bowl, and lost a 38-31 decision to Central Oklahoma. It marked the fifth bowl invitation the Texans had in their history.

Dave Campbell’s magazine predicts that Texas A&M-Commerce will be the team to beat in the nine-team LSC alignment in 2018. Midwestern State is picked second, followed by Angelo State at No. 3, Eastern New Mexico No. 4 and Texas A&M-Kingsville at No. 5. Following the Texans, West Texas A&M is picked No. 7, followed by UT-Permian Basin and Western New Mexico.

The magazine states that TSU “looks ready to challenge” in the LSC, featuring eight returning offensive starters. The Texans will, however, have to replace the school’s all-time leading passer, quarterback Zed Woerner.

A&M-Commerce is coming off a national title in 2017, but they Lions lost quarterback Luis Perez, the Harlon Hill Trophy winner, to graduation.

The first game of the 2018 season will be played on a Thursday. It will be Aug. 30 at home against Delta State, with a 7 p.m. start.
