Glen Rose is picked to finish second in the new District 8-3A by Dave Campbell's 2010 Texas Football magazine, which hit newsstands next week.
The Tigers, who are coming off a 7-4 season and a thrilling first-round playoff loss to Wimberly, are behind district-favorite Kennedale in the poll, and ahead Alvarado, the third team the magazine predicts will reach the 3A playoffs. Rounding out the 8-3A poll are West in fourth, followed by Hillsboro and Venus.
As long as either Kennedale or Alvarado reach the post season, Glen Rose would be assured of taking the Division II playoff route.
No. 19 Kennedale is the only team ranked in the magazine's 3A Top 25 poll.
Several Tigers were mentioned as "players to watch," including running back Chase Evatt, linebacker Colin Lane, receiver Kevin Brooks, defensive tackle Jimmy Johnson and defensive end Curran Morrison. "Top juniors" listed include quarterback Frank Brandenburg and offensive lineman Jason Geyer, while the "top sophomore" listed is defensive tackle Jared Thames.
The magazine also lists a number of "other prospects," including offensive lineman Jeremy Dooley, linebacker Stetson Murdock, linebacker Cody Burtscher, offensive lineman Trey Nabours, offensive lineman Brandon Oliver, fullback Ben Mungia, defensive end Colten Allen, offensive lineman Jesse Garza, kicker Taner Tongate and linebacker Jesse Betsill.
The skinny on the Tigers says the return of Evatt, Brooks and Dooley should help Brandenburg ease into the starting quarterback role. Defensively, the notes praise Morrison and Lane while also mentioning the Tigers should benefit with the return of Johnson, who missed four games with an injury last fall.
