An Odessa woman was detained in Glen Rose on Sunday after allegedly shooting and killing a soldier in Blum, 30 miles east of Somervell County.
According to a report from KXXV News Channel 25, April Danielle Thompson, 24, was arrested and charged with manslaughter after she shot and killed 20-year-old Private Cody Ryan Patterson on Saturday around 4 a.m.
Somervell County Sheriff’s Department located Thompson in a residence near Highway 67 in the western part of the county on Sunday. The department detained her until they were able to turn her over to Hill County Sheriff’s Department for processing, Lieutenant Anders Dahl said.
After Thompson was processed, Hill County Sheriff Jeffrey Lyons was able to piece together Patterson’s death, he told KXXV.
Thompson told police she did not intend to kill Patterson.
Lyons told KXXV that the two had been “socializing” while Thompson was in town visiting her child from a previous marriage. That night, the two ended up in bed at Patterson’s mother’s house when Thompson found Patterson’s .22 caliber revolver.
“She said she thought it was a toy. Mr. Patterson said it was not - that is was real, but not loaded. At that point, she cocked the hammer and pulled the trigger,” Lyons said.
Patterson was shot at point-blank range, which was contributing factor, along with the bullets size, to his death, authorities said.
Thompson’s bond was set at $125,000.
Patterson was on leave from a tour of duty in Iraq. He served in the Army’s 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss.
