RICHLAND SPRINGS - Walnut Springs knew what it was taking on when Richland Springs was scheduled for the 2008 season opener. The Coyotes did win the Six-Man Division I state title last fall, afterall.
Even though the Hornets are picked to win their Division II district by Dave Campbellís 2008 Texas Football Magazine, they didnít have the strength to score with Richland Springs in a wide open shootout last Friday.
The Coyotes tallied 486 yards of offense, including 315 yards passing and five touchdowns through the air from quarterback Haustin Burkhart, on their way to a 82-36 blowout of the Hornets.
Walnut Springs is on the road again this week, as the the Hornets visit perennial power Gordon at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
GHS is picked to be a playoff contender at the end of the season, and opened with a 60-38 defeat of state-ranked Valley in the fifth annual Six-Man Super Saturday in Hico, presented by Nike.
After the second straight road trip to begin the season, Walnut Springs hosts Aquilla next week for the for the first of a three-game homestand that also includes Blum and Jonesboro.
