The Wheeler Branch Reservoir is expected to open in June or July for day-use only.
Kevin Taylor, general manager of the Somervell County Water District Board that developed the reservoir project, said the exact opening date will depend on the weather.
Construction is underway on the park area, which will have picnic tables and eventually a fishing pier, pavilion and restroom facilities.
Swimming in a designated area, canoeing and kayaking and picnicking will be the main activities allowed at first. Taylor said no gas-powered boats can be used on the lake.
No overnight camping or fishing will be allowed at first, either. Although the reservoir has been stocked with a variety of fish, it will be next year or perhaps even 2012 before fishing is approved by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.
There will be a fee to enter the park, although the district hasn’t decided how much to charge yet.
“We’re starting out small and see what it evolves into,” Taylor said.
