Special to the Reporter
Local resident and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and educator Dan Malone on Saturday received the Open Doors Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, Fort Worth Chapter.
Malone, an instructor in the communications studies department at Tarleton State University, said he was surprised to learn he had received the award
"I'm honored, of course, but also a bit mystified because I haven't done much in a newsroom or a classroom that others haven't done as well or better," he said. "However, it's very rewarding to be able to pass along to our students some of the things that were passed along to me by my mentors and teachers."
The Open Doors Award celebrates the record of an individual or organization that defends the people's right to open government and open records.
Malone was presented with the award on April 16 at the seventh annual First Amendment Awards and Scholarship Dinner at Cacharel Restaurant in Arlington. He lives on a ranch eight miles south of Glen Rose. He is the son of Grace and Charles Malone of Walnut Springs.
