SAN ANTONIO - KLRN Public Television is gearing up for one of their largest fundraisers of the year, and it is a tasty one. The San Antonio Wine Festival, an event that has taken place for more than 30 years, started out as a small gathering of wine lovers, but has grown into one of the most popular wine events in the city.
Serving wines and champagnes from all over the globe, the festival also has a great representation of Texas wines as well. With three very different events over two days, one can honestly say there is something for everyone at the San Antonio Wine Festival.
The weekend kicks off Friday, Feb. 15 at the St. Anthony Hotel with the Wine Opener, a black-tie event that highlights the gold-medal winning wines from the 2013 San Antonio Wine Competition. Delectable dishes that compliment good wine are served, and live music performed by Henry Brun and the Latin Playerz all make for a wonderful evening.
On Sunday, Feb. 17, the fun continues with bubbly, brunch and jazz at the Champagne Brunch, also held at the St. Anthony Hotel. A variety of champagnes and wines are served along with a full and robust brunch— a combination to make any Sunday wonderful. A live performance by The Jim Cullum Jazz Band keeps the mood just right.
The San Antonio Wine Festival concludes with the granddaddy of all events, the Fine Wine and Cuisine Tasting, held at the Alamodome. This event draws crowds of 3,000 + and truly is a community gathering. More than 35 restaurants serve samples of their favorite dishes, and over 350 different wines are available for tasting. Live music is performed on three different stages throughout the maze of good food and wine. For the person looking to become acquainted with wine of all sorts and food to please any palate, this event is definitely a great choice.
This year’s San Antonio Wine Festival is chaired by Joanna Weidman and Marian Suarez, both of NuStar Energy.
All proceeds benefit KLRN, serving South Central Texas, to help fund educational workshops, programming and community initiatives.
