NHL free agency: Rangers get Trochek, Senators land Giroux

Free agency opened in the NHL with a flurry of deals. Claude Giroux is leaving Florida for a homecoming in Ottawa. The Washington Capitals landed Stanley Cup-winning goaltender Darcy Kuemper from Colorado. The New York Rangers signed forward Vincent Trocheck to a seven-year contract. There was also a big trade with 2017 Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Brent Burns going from San Jose to the Carolina Hurricanes. Edmonton signed goalie Jack Campbell and forward Andrew Copp left the Rangers to sign with Detroit. Top free agents Nazem Kadri, Johnny Gaudreau, Ondrej Palat and John Klingberg were still available.

The risk of attending and not getting selected

After sitting through 12-plus rounds of the NHL draft over the span of two consecutive summers, Andrew Mangiapane had all but given up on hearing his name called. The low point came during the 2015 draft in Florida, where midway through the sixth round, Mangiapane’s father apologized for persuading his 19-year-old son to relive the frustration of not getting selected a year earlier in Philadelphia.

BOSTON (AP) — Growing up as the son of a major league ballplayer, Terry Francona knew the rules: “Talk only when spoken to, or I’d be spanked.” When Francona became a big league manager and his players would bring their kids around, he ran a more hospitable clubhouse. “There used to be a big sign that said ‘No kids,’ or whatever,” said Francona, who followed his father, Tito, to the majors and is now the Cleveland Guardians’ manager.
