GLEN ROSE – Through two quarters on Friday evening, the junior varsity Runnin’ Tigers looked to be handling business in their home finale. But Keene’s 11-5 advantage in the third quarter was more than Glen Rose could come back from, as the junior varsity dropped its final game of the 2015-16 season in Tiger Arena, 34-32.
The Runnin’ Tigers’ 11-7 first quarter lead grew by three when Kelton Brand rattled home a trey from the top of the arc with well over five minutes to play in the second quarter. Keene closed the first half on a 6-2 run to send the Runnin’ Tigers into the third quarter holding onto an 18-14 lead.
The Chargers took the ensuing in bound directly to the basket and pulled within two points. Keene took its first lead, 21-20, with 3:12 to play in the third quarter on a three ball from the left wing.
Keene’s run and Glen Rose’s scoring drought continued into the final minute of the third quarter.
Bernard received a favorable, home-court bounce on a jumper along the right baseline that closed the deficit to two, 25-23 as the third quarter closed.
After a Keene three to start the final seven minutes, Adrian Lewis stepped in front of a Chargers’ pass and was fouled on the ensuing fast-break layup. He made the first, missed the second, but Chance Hatfield was there to grab the offensive rebound.
Hatfield was fouled on his way back up with the rebound, converted on both of his opportunities from the free throw line and pulled Glen Rose back within two points.
River Costello collected the second-straight Runnin’ Tigers offensive rebound on the next trip down the court and his put-back bucket tied the game at 28 with a few ticks under four minutes to play in the fourth quarter.
Glen Rose added a basket to take a two-point lead, but Keene responded with four-straight points and the Runnin’ Tigers trailed by two points with 14.71 seconds on the clock when Head Coach Erik Hartman called a timeout.
The ensuing shot was blocked and chance to tie never made it towards the rim, as the Runnin’ Tigers dropped their last home game of the season, 34-32.
Bernard led the offensive attacked with 10 points behind two of the Runnin’ Tigers’ three treys. Hansen added six points, Caden White notched all five of his in the first quarter, Weston Rynders and Costello added four points, Hatfield scored two and Lewis rounded out the night with one.
The junior varsity squad will return to the hardwood for the final time on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at Millsap with a first tip set for 6:15 p.m.
