WALNUT SPRINGS — Ben Muniz scored three touchdowns as Walnut Springs held off Covington last Friday night, 52-50, in a non-district six-man football contest.
The third TD for Muniz — a 50-yard kick return — turned out to be the winning margin for the Hornets (3-2). It put the Hornets ahead, 52-44, with 3:57 left in the fourth quarter.
Covington added a 19-yard TD pass with 1:45 remaining, but the 0-4 Owls’ kick for a 2-point conversion failed.
Muniz also scored the first two TDs for Walnut Springs, on runs of 5 and 13 yards as the Hornets gained a 22-19 lead by the end of the opening quarter.
Cristian Granados added a pair TD passes for the Hornets, connecting with Cruz Chavez on a 10-yard toss and later with Miguel Ponce from 9 yards away.
Ponce tacked on another TD on a 61-yard kick return.
Alex Villarreal scored the other TD for Walnut Springs, on a 2-yard run in the first quarter.
On defense for Walnut Springs, Ponce led the way with 16 tackles and Granados had 12.
The next game for the Hornets will be Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Avalon, in another non-district contest.
