Marty Yates of Stephenville put a charge into Saturday night’s huge crowd, recording a record-setting time in the tie-down roping event at the 49th annual Cowboy Capital of the World PRCA Rodeo.

Yates won the event with a time of 7.2 seconds to set a new mark for that event at Lone Star Arena.

Ben Clements, who was the rodeo’s announcer along with Justin McKee, said the old record for Lone Star Arena in the tie-down event was 7.4 seconds.

“It was an outstanding run, and Marty certainly electrified the crowd,” Clements said.

Yates entered the rodeo ranked 10th in the world in tie-down in the PRCA Ram World Standings. He earned $2,447 for his victory.

The rodeo began Thursday with slack competition, and concluded Sunday afternoon.

The recipient of this year’s check donation during Friday’s America Patriot Night at the rodeo was the Disabled Veterans Association of Stephenville, Clements said.

Trevor Brazile of Decatur, who entered ranked No. 2 in the world in the all-around, was this year’s Cowboy Capital of the World PRCA rodeo all-around winner, earning $2,331 for his performances in tie-down, team roping and steer roping.

Both Clements and longtime local rodeo secretary Delia Walls said Saturday night’s ticket sales reached about $11,000, not including pre-sale tickets.

“There was a huge crowd Saturday night — probably the biggest crowd we’ve ever had,” Walls said. “It was packed.”

The total money payout for the rodeo is listed as $125,890.

During Sunday’s saddle bronc riding, a young competitor suffered a broken leg, but no other major injuries were reported.
