Glen Rose High School junior Joel Mendoza brought home a state championship gold medal and a plaque after winning the Copy Editing event held May 3 during the University Interscholastic League’s Academic Spring competition on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin. GRHS UIL Academic coordinator Angela Gill said Mendoza competed in a field of 12 Class 4A students in the Copy Editing event. He also won the TOPS in Texas Award, with the best score among all students entered in that event, including all classifications — A through 6A. "He's just a special kid. He was very excited," said GRHS English teacher Laura Harlin, who accompanied Mendoza to Austin. "He's an extremely diligent and hard worker." Harlin said Mendoza missed just two points out of a possible 25, covering three categories of copy editing.
