A 16-year-old from Marshall was the victim of Friday’s accidental drowning in a swimming pool at Oak Tree West apartment complex.
Ketrevion Carter was in Stephenville visiting his brother who is a student at Tarleton State University, according to Lt. James Gresham with the Stephenville Police Department.
“He and his brother were visiting a friend who lives at Oak Tree,” Gresham said. “The group was waiting on pizza and Ketrevion decided to go to the swimming pool ahead of the group. He did not know how to swim.”
Ketrevion was found unresponsive at the deep end of the pool by a couple who arrived minutes later.
“The man jumped in the pool and pulled (Carter out), started CPR and called 9-1-1,” Gresham said.
Carter was transported by ambulance to Texas Health Resources Stephenville Hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 9:30 p.m.
According to The Marshall News Messenger, Carter was a popular student who was about to begin his sophomore year at Marshall High School as an offensive lineman for the Mavericks.
Marshall offensive coordinator Zach Quinlan told the Messenger that although Carter had not played on varsity yet, he had a lot of potential.
“He was a good kid, a good young kid who had a lot of potential in football and in life,” Quinlan told the Messenger. “It’s a very sad situation.”
Gresham said no foul play is suspected and alcohol was not a factor in the tragedy. “This was just a horrible accident,” Gresham said. “This was a young man who by all accounts was a great kid who just didn’t know how to swim.”
