Hakuna Matata! Don’t have any worries for the rest of your days because the Glen Rose junior high and high school’s production of The Lion King Jr. premieres this weekend at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Glen Rose High School auditorium.

For the first time in four years, the junior high and high school are performing together. Four years ago, the two schools combined and performed The Wizard of Oz.

“We don’t know if it’s going to be an ‘every four years’ thing, but with as big as an event as it is for us, we might have to make it that way,” said Koriann Hammond, lead director of The Lion King Jr.

Over 80 students are involved in the production, which also includes some students from the elementary and intermediate campuses.

“For our young Nala and young Simba, we asked for some young'uns to come and audition for us so we have five students between elementary and intermediate campuses, three of which will be playing in the young Nala and young Simba roles and the other two are in the ensemble,” Hammond said. “Our youngest is a second grader; he’s one of our young Simbas so we’ve got all the way from second grade to senior.”

Adult tickets are $8 and $5 for children and students. Lap children get in free.

“They (the students) work their tail ends off and have that goal in mind. They’ve had such amazing energy throughout the whole process, but they always look forward to putting it all together, so it’s been really cool to see them be proud for what they’re putting on the stage,” Hammond said.

Tickets can be purchased at both schools in the front offices or at the door.

Hammond said she is excited for the parents and the community to be “blown away.”

“This is probably the largest production that we have ever done and right now, we’re looking at numbers as far as audience members larger than we’ve ever had,” she said. “There’s a huge excitement and a huge buzz about the show so I'm excited for them to see what junior high and high school students are capable of.

“Though they may be young, they’re fierce.”
