CARTHAGE, Texas (AP) — A sheriff's deputy was fatally shot early Tuesday during a traffic stop in East Texas, authorities said.
The Panola County sheriff's office said in a statement that one of its deputies had stopped a sport utility vehicle near the town of Gary City at about 2 a.m., when the driver got out of the vehicle and fired a weapon numerous times at the deputy.

The sheriff's office said the deputy was taken to a hospital, where he died. Authorities did not identify the deputy.
The suspect will be extradited back to Texas, the sheriff's office said.
The sheriff's office said it had no additional information to release.
