The Glen Rose Reporter and staff received top honors at the West Texas Press Association’s (WTPA) annual convention, which was held in San Angelo July 16-18.
The Reporter won third place in the sweepstakes category, a difficult category that evaluates all contest submissions. The Reporter was also given honorable mention in the general excellence category.
Staff Writer Whitney White-Ashley won first place in the column writing category for her take on the 2008 General Motors bail out. She also received second place in the news writing category and honorable mention in the photography category.
The Reporter sports staff and Staff Writer Nathan Bural won third place in the sports coverage category. This category evaluated sports photography as well as written stories.
WTPA is considered the “largest regional association in the world” because of its vast geographic area. The Association is composed of weekly, semi-weekly and small daily newspapers in the great West Texas area with Fort Davis, Fort Stockton, Hondo, Gatesville, Perryton, Vernon, Burkburnett, Decatur and Dallas being the fringe area cities. Several newspapers in Eastern New Mexico are also members of WTPA.
The WTPA Better Newspaper Contest gives each newspaper a chance to compete with other publications of similar size and frequency of publication. Plaques are presented for first place and certificates to second, third and honorable mention as a special event at the annual summer convention.
