Donna Hagar of the Somervell County Master Gardeners Association is the 2011 Glen Rose "Citizen of the Year."

Mayor Jean King announced the award at Monday evening's Glen Rose City Council meeting.

Hagar was present in the council chambers along with other Master Gardeners. She thought they were being honored for bringing the State Master Gardeners convention to Glen Rose last year.

They were, but Hagar was singled out for her role in coordinating the convention. She also was involved in the "Put the Rose Back in Glen Rose" campaign to plant "Earth-Kind" roses around town in preparation for the influx of visitors from the convention.

Hagar expressed surprise at the award.

"I didn't expect it at all," she said as she showed the certificate given to her by the mayor.

Then she accompanied Mayor Pro Tem Bob Stricklin outside Town Hall, where he removed the covering from the sign in front of Town Hall honoring Hagar as the Citizen of the Year. they posed for pictures and Hagar received hugs from well-wishers.

"It's an honor," Hagar said. "And a total surprise."
