Reporter Staff Report
The Glen Rose Reporter took home its first Texas Press Association (TPA) award at the 2009 Better Newspaper Contest in June.
The Reporter claimed third place in the column writing competition that included weekly newspapers from across the state.
A total of 192 newspapers submitted 1,896 entries in the contest that included categories such as headline writing, feature writing, news writing, column writing, photography and sports coverage. Submissions had to be published during the 2008 calendar year.
Some 117 weeklies were divided into five divisions with 23 papers of similar circulation size.
Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association members judged this year’s contest, which marked the 130th annual event that was held in Austin, Thurs., June 18, through Sat., June 20.
Not only is the award a first for the Reporter, it is the first TPA award garnered by column writer and reporter Whitney White-Ashley.
