Mario Vara, 25, of Walnut Springs, was arrested April 23 after an altercation at the Larry Joe Taylor Music Fest in Stephenville.

James Harrell Lamance, Jr., 36, of Boyd, was airlifted to the hospital after sustaining severe injuries during the fight.

Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant said it is unclear why the two men began fighting.

“It was an altercation that happened between 9 and 9:30 p.m. between two individuals,” Bryant said. “There was a huge crowd in front of the stage. Apparently, what started the whole deal was somebody bumped into somebody else. Hopefully, we’ll know more when we can talk to the victim.”

Bryant said Lamance suffered severe head trauma and underwent surgery once the swelling went down. Lamance has reportedly been released from the hospital.

Vara was arrested and charged with assault with bodily injury.

The Walnut Springs resident has a lengthy criminal history including a 2003 conviction for assault causing bodily injury in Meridian and two convictions for driving while intoxicated.

Investigator Randy Fowler is leading the current investigation.

Vara was released from the Erath County Jail after posting a $3,000 bond.
