Sounds of fiddlers young and old filled the Somervell County Expo Center Saturday for the 11th annual Dale McPherson Memorial Fiddle Contest.
Fiddlers competed for cash prizes in several age groups ranging from 0-12 to 50 and older.
The contest is run by the McPherson family in honor of the late Dale McPherson, former Somervell County judge. Dale passed away in 1999, shortly after he held the first fiddle competition in 1998.
“We had the first one in November 1998,” Dale’s wife, Kay McPherson said. “We didn’t realize he was sick. We decided to keep this tradition going that he wanted to do so badly.”
Dale was trying to carry on a family tradition that had been in his family for decades.
“My grandkids play and they are fifth generation fiddle players,” Kay said. “We’ve been into fiddle music for a long time.”
And the music continued for the McPherson family Saturday as 14-year-old Benjamin McPherson took the stage. He won sixth place in his age bracket and carried on his grandfather’s tradition.
