Somervell County Commissioners on Monday canvassed and approved the final vote totals in the Nov. 2 general election.

Final tallies showed that 1,445 early votes were cast, setting a record for an election with a gubernatorial race. On Election Day, 1,342 votes were cast, for a total of 2,787 votes, or a turnout of 49 percent of the county’s registered voters.

The county's record for early voting was 2,000 when there was a presidential race on the ballot.

Because commissioners James Barnard and Mike Ford were candidates in the election, the motion to approve the vote totals and to second the motion fell to commissioners Lloyd Wirt and Zach Cummings. Barnard was re-elected to his position and Ford was elected county judge, edging Dwayne Griffin. They will take office on Jan. 1.
