Thanksgiving is the holiday of people giving thanks for their many blessings, and it often happens, that in so doing people often want to give back to those who are less fortunate. They want to help bless others in the way they have been blessed. Larry and Judy Higgins, owners of Hammondís Bar B Q, are two such people that have been helping to bless others since 1999.
The year 1999 was when Darrell Caldwell, who at that time was the owner of Hammondís Bar B Q, started providing anyone in need a free Thanksgiving meal. Judy and Larry Higgins and their family helped serve the free meal that first year, but the following year, 2000, they bought the restaurant from Caldwell, Judyís brother, and have continued the tradition.
The meal is served buffet style with the usual Thanksgiving staples: turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, rolls, and dessert. The meal has always been free, but they do have a tip jar that accepts donations for the food bank at the United Methodist Church, which has collected up to $500 in past years.
This is the 10th anniversary of dishing up the tradition - and the 10th time the Higgins have given back to their community.
