The new 180-acre Wheeler Branch Reservoir will open for fishing Sept. 1, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission announced last week.

The agency also disclosed the lake's fishing regulations for 2011-2012.

The reservoir will have a 14- to 21-inch slot length limit for largemouth bass; an 18-inch minimum length limit for smallmouth bass; and a five fish per day bag limit for black bass (combined), including no more than three smallmouth bass and only one largemouth bass 21 inches or more, TP&W said.

“We expect a real big response” when the reservoir opens for fishing, Kevin Taylor, manager of the Somervell County Water District, said.

Fishing from the bank will cost $4 weekdays and $5 weekends for Somervell County residents.

Fishing from boats will cost $10 weekdays and $15 weekends. Only non-gas-powered boats will be allowed on the lake.

In addition to bass, the reservoir is stocked with walleye and catfish.
