Fireworks will light up the night sky on the evening of July 3rd for the first time in many years as Glen Rose celebrates the Fourth of July with a fireworks display over Wheeler Branch Reservoir.

Glen Rose has not had a fireworks display for many years, primarily due to not having a suitable location due to the hot dry summers and associated burn bans.

Several months ago the Glen Rose/Somervell County Chamber of Commerce met with the county's Water District Board and sought permission to have the fireworks at the reservoir. Permission was granted after Illumination Fireworks from Dallas conducted a site assessment of the reservoir and made a presentation to the board.

The plan is to shoot the fireworks off of the dam over the water. The fireworks should be visible from many locations around Glen Rose.

Fireworks are expensive and the show in Glen Rose which will last 15 to 20 minutes, the standard length of firework shows will cost $15,000. The chamber has raised $9,500 of that amount from individuals and businesses in Somervell County. Every dollar raised is going directly to the fireworks program at Wheeler Branch.

"The chamber is not using this as a fundraiser for the chamber,"said Angel Smith, chamber events coordinator. "Every dollar raised is for the fireworks for the community."

As there is limited parking for about 150 cars at the Wheeler Branch Reservoir, the chamber is reserving those spots for people who have contributed to the fireworks program. This includes sponsors and individuals. The plan is to raise half the fee from corporate sponsors and the other half from individual contributions.

Corporate sponsorships are available from as little as $500, individual sponsorship for $100. Corporate sponsors will receive name recognition in all advertisements for the fireworks program, as well as a banner at the VIP area at the reservoir. Individuals will receive a car pass to park at the reservoir and four wristbands for access to the VIP pavilion. Also included in the package will be special 3-D fireworks glasses and a restricted seating area at the reservoir where patriotic music will be played, timed to the fireworks.

Everyone will have to bring their own blankets, chairs and cold drinks. The VIP party will start at 7:30 p.m. with entertainment and light barbecue. Alcohol is not allowed on the water district's property. This year the reservoir will be closed to boats after 7 p.m.
