Saturday, Nov. 8, was the 10th annual and 9th memorial Dale McPherson Fiddle Contest.

Fiddlers of all ages came from Oklahoma and Texas to the Somervell County Expo Center. Kay McPherson, Dale’s wife, said there were more than 200 people in attendance.

“It’s getting close to being the largest contest in the state,” Kay said.

Fiddlers performed old-fashioned fiddle music and waltzes. Winners were awarded various cash prizes.

Dale’s grandson, Ben McPherson, is a fifth generation fiddler and competed in the 11-12 year old age group.

Dale started the contest 10 years ago after becoming involved other competitions as a judge. He wanted to have a family event that people could attend free of charge. Kay said Dale organized the first contest and collected donations for the cash prizes.

Ten years later, Kay continues her late husband’s passion and the contest has been sanctioned by the Old Fiddlers Association.
