The University Interscholastic League has postponed all athletic competitions until May 11, eliminating the regional track and field championships altogether, due to outbreaks of the Swine Flu.

By eliminating the regional meets, the state competition will be extended from two days to three and will accept the top four athletes from each region, based on the results from district meets.

“I feel sorry for these kids,” said Glen Rose Head Girls Track Coach Linda Waggoner.  “They’ve worked really hard and I hate that they aren’t going to regionals.  They’ve been working hard and their times have been improving at each meet, but there’s nothing we can do."

The official state invitations will be posted on the UIL Website on May 6 and the state meet will be held in Austin from May 12-14.

The 2009 baseball postseason, which was set to begin on May 1, cannot begin until at least May 11.

Glen Rose had a warm-up game scheduled with Crawford on May 2, but had to cancel it and will now tune-up against Rockford on May 12.

The Tigers received a first round bye after claiming the District 7-3A championship, but the bi-district round of the baseball postseason must be completed by May 23.

The remaining rounds must then be completed, with the regional finals being done by June 6.

“Basically we play Tuesday, weekend, Tuesday, weekend,” said Tiger head baseball coach Kenny Toney.  “That means that more than likely I’ll be flipping for one game, rather than a three game series.”

Typically coaches are allowed to choose between playing one game or a best of three game series, but due to the postponement, all matchups that fall in the middle of a week will automatically be one game.

“We’re going to wait and see,” said Toney when asked about how the layoff will affect his athletes.  “We’ll probably have a couple of days with no practice.  We’ll just have to tend to business as usual and stick to our routine.”

Glen Rose will meet Bridgeport in the area round in a one-game playoff.  The date and location are still undetermined.

In addition, all UIL non-athletic events will be rescheduled at a later date.
