The High School Optimist Youth of the Month for September were Kathryn McCravey and Derek Thompson.

McCravey is ranked 24th in her class, placing her in the top 25 percent of the class.

Her achievements include: Regional UIL Debate for 2008; 3rd year member of the GRHS Student Council; active member of Somervell County’s 4-H program.

Her leadership roles include: Senior Class President; FCCLA Secretary and Treasurer; Junior Class President; mentor to Intermediate ESL students.

McCravey’s community involvement includes: Somervell County Relay for Life; member of Cottonwood Baptist Church; community outreach through NRRBC Baptist Church for two years.

Thompson’s academic achievements include: Ranked 8th in class of 115; Academic All-District Football and Basketball.

His other achievements include: 2007 State Quarter-finalist/ All-state Quarter Back; Dave Campbell’s 12-3A Player of the Year; 1st Team All-District Basketball 2007; Defensive MVP 2006; 1st Team All-District Pitcher 2006-07; Regional Qualifiers in Doubles Tennis - three years.

His leadership qualities include: Future Leader’s Organization, three year; three-year officer of Student Council; Fellowship of Christian Athletes, three years; Students Against Destructive Decisions, four years.

His community involvement includes: Cornerstone Fellowship Church; coach 5th grade Pee Wee football team; participated in Relay for Life, blood drive, canned food drive and supplies for Iraqi troops.
