Glen Rose Independent School District and the Luminant Scholar Program are calling on fifth-grade students to brainstorm creative ways to raise environmental awareness in their daily lives.Starting this month, Glen Rose ISD fifth graders will write one-page essays, sharing their ideas for how they can help protect the environment.

This is Luminant’s third year to sponsor the program, which will award one district winner, chosen by a representative of Glen Rose ISD, with a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond at a ceremony to be held in the coming weeks.

“We’re embarking on another Luminant Scholar Program and excited to continue challenging fifth graders to look for innovative ways to protect our environment,” said Phil Wilson, senior vice president of public affairs at Luminant. “It is our hope that this essay-writing competition will motivate students to make positive environmental changes in their communities and to continue learning through the scholarships and grants we award.”

Schools representing the winning essays will also be eligible to receive one of three $5,000 Luminant grants. Grand-prize winners will be announced in December at the end of the program. In all, Luminant expects to award nearly $50,000 in scholarships and grants this fall.
