Sometimes the fact that my life’s an adventure seems to add some adventure to the lives of those around me…like my wife, Robbie.

Some years ago I was invited to speak at a high school commencement in New Mexico where a friend of ours was high school principal. Robbie and I flew to Amarillo, then made the short drive into New Mexico for the event. While there, a friend of my friend learned that one of my hobbies is making jewelry from rattlesnake vertebrae, tanning snake hides and eating the meat when the snake is large enough — and fresh enough.

This friend had a rattlesnake — a WHOLE rattlesnake — in his freezer and offered it to me. How could I turn down such an offer? I called Southwest Airlines to be sure it would be all right to ship my treasure in my checked bag. They okayed it; we were good-to-go.

Since the drive back to the Amarillo airport was relatively short, the flight to Dallas was very short and the trip back to Glen Rose was rather brief, the snake was still frozen when we got home. So I just put it out in our freezer.

A couple of weeks later I was sitting here working on the computer when I remembered that snake in the freezer. I decided that I really needed to get the snake taken care of so, with Robbie unaware, I brought it in the house.

I filled our kitchen sink with hot water, took the coiled, frozen snake from the bag it was in and placed it in the hot water. It floated. I came back to work here on the computer.

A few minutes later Robbie walked up beside me and rather quietly, said, “I just wish you would tell me when I’m going to walk in the kitchen…and find a rattlesnake floating in the sink.”

I promised I’d try to do better. And I am.

Life’s an adventure. I’m…WE’RE livin’ it up!
