Special to the Reporter
Get ready to hunt for treasures and contribute to a good cause this Saturday when sales will be held to benefit Somervell County Relay for Life.
The annual parking lot sale at the Glen Rose Medical Center and the Best Value Medical Center Pharmacy across the street open at 8 a.m. Anyone who has a team at the Somervell County Relay for Life event can set up there.
The pharmacy also is selling tickets for several raffles: a 32-inch high-definition flat-screen TV, a Mother's Day basket of fresh flowers and an Easter wreath. Tickets for the TV are $2 each or three for $5, and $1 each for the flowers and wreath. The drawing will be held during Relay for Life in April.
In addition, a Tolbert-sanctioned BBQ & Chili Cook-Off will be held Friday and Saturday at Tres Rios River Ranch. Full hook-up RV camp sites and cabins are available for Friday and Saturday night. All cooks are welcome and invited to participate. Prize money will be awarded. For more information or to make reservations, contact Lori Nunez at 817-781-5082.
Other teams around town are holding fund-raising activties and raffles as well. Brookshire's, for example, is selling raffle tickets for more than $1,000 in merchandise, including the grand prize, a Gateway laptop computer donated by Paluxy River Realty. Other items include restaurant and store gift cards, a basketball goal, a perfume gift basket and a canopy. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20.
Proceeds from all events benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
The county's Relay for Life event will be held at the Somervell County Soccer Park from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on April 23 and 24. Teams already are working to raise funds through community activities in and around Glen Rose.
There's still time for anyone wanting to organize a team to do so. At Relay, teams of people camp out at the park and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length. Every person who participates has a chance to celebrate, remember people who have been touched by cancer and fight back.
Relay for Life is still seeking sponsors. Sponsorship levels range from $100, which displays the company name in the event program and a track sign, as well as a company banner; $250, which also includes company recognition throughout the event and registration fee for one team waived; and $500, which also recognizes the company online and on the sponsorship sign at the kick-off party, the event itself and the wrap-up celebration.
The $500 underwriting level also allows the sponsor's name to be printed on the back of the event T-shirt. The deadline for sponsors to sign up to be included on the T-shirt is March 27.
Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society's signature fund-raising event, started in 1985 at one site and now is represented in more than 3,800 communities. Somervell County Relay for Life raised almost $55,000 last year and hopes to raise $61,000 this year.
