Solavaca Ranch will be the site of the fifth leg of this year’s state championship mountain biking competition on April 24 and 25.

The ranch, owned by Anne and Mack Hargrave, is located on FM 205 about four-and-a-half miles from Dinosaur Valley State Park. Its rugged terrain includes more than eight miles of mountain biking trails.

More than 400 riders are expected to compete in the Solavaca Cat Claw Classic, part of the Texas XC State Championship Mountain Bike Series. The title of state champion will be awarded at the end of May.

Glen Rose has become a popular destination for mountain biking. Solavaca Ranch’s trails, which Hargrave himself rides and built to share, has ideal topography for a mountain bike trail – a large scenic variety of rocky hills and flats, all covered with cedar, oak, pecan, elm, mesquite, cottonwood and many other native Texas trees. A seasonal creek runs across the property from south to north. Trails and three miles of dirt roads are designed for all levels of riders. Those vying for the state championship will find features suited to their advanced skill levels – rock-strewn descents, climbing switchbacks, steep drop-offs, roots, logs and a rock garden, to name a few.

Pre-rides and race preparation begin on Saturday, April 24.

Kids and youth also can compete in two races that day — the Bike Texas Kid Kup Race and the Shimano Youth Race series. They include a safety clinic and technical skills clinic. Children must have helmets, a bike and an entry form signed by a parent.

The adult championship race takes place on Sunday, April 25, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Spectators are welcome.

Registration for the adult race is $30 online and $35 on-site. Camping is $10 per tent and $15 per RV.

Solavaca is charging a land-use fee for all visitors for the weekend event. For arrivals Friday through Sunday, the fee is $5 for adults. Kids 12 and under are free. Food and drinks will be available for purchase from a vendor.

The ranch is open for mountain biking Thursday through Sunday and holidays for all levels of riders. Bring your own bike. Helmets are required. No pets are allowed.

Trail use fees are $3 for adults per day and free for children 12 and younger. Camping is by reservation only.
