Special to the Reporter

City and county officials turned out Friday to help celebrate National Senior Citizens’ Day at the Citizens Center. Justice of the Peace Dwayne Griffin read Proclamation 5847, penned by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, proclaiming Aug. 21 as National Senior Citizens’ Day.

Mayor Pam Miller made a surprise presentation to Somervell County Committee on Aging Director Pam Baker of a key to the city. Also on hand for the celebration was Justice of the Peace Ronnie Webb.

Last week’s “42” tournament ended with a tie for first place between the teams of Alice Lance and Janelle Gartrell and Royce Stacy and Clark Stewart. Second-place winners were Zula Hunter and Cora Harkins. Third place went to Roy Mercer and James Kelley. Fourth place went to Loveda Swaim and Grady May.

Other teams in the tournament were: Veda Gosdin and Nancy Moore, Dorothy Jo Osborn and Ila Verne Stull, Floyd Flanary and Dortha Beck, Pat Thompson and Roger Jordan, Mary Voss and Charlotte Carmichael, Eddie and Billie Flanary, and Ann Parham and Trey Welch. Thanks, Mary, for being our tournament judge.

Our scrapbooking sessions will be on the second and fourth Wednesdays at 1 p.m. and will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 25. We will provide tools like scissors, paper cutters, hot glue, templates, etc. Just bring your pictures, mementos, papers and embellishments. There should be plenty of papers and embellishments available for sharing and Mary has lots of ideas and books to help you along.

Our first Bunco tournament will be on the 25th at 10 a.m. We will let you know how it went and hopefully be planning more in the future. If you can roll dice, you can play Bunco.

We are planning a Fossil Rim Wildlife Center trip for sometime in October. Please call or come by the center if you think you would be interested and watch for details in future articles.

The month of August has some occasions we’d like to acknowledge. Johnny Selby and Pam Baker have birthdays. Judy Ward and Sandy Hudson celebrate their anniversaries with the center. Judy has been here eight years and Sandy seven years. Happy birthday and congratulations.

Also of note, our director, Pam Baker will have been with us 25 years on Sept. 13. We will be honoring her with cake, punch and many well wishes on that day.

Activities at the Citizens Center beginning Aug. 30 are: “42,” exercise and Wii bowling on Monday; “42,” needlework and ceramics on Tuesday; “42” tournament, Clark Cole, and Palo Pinto Utility Assistance on Wednesday; “42,” exercise and David’s grocery shopping on Thursday; “42,” bingo, quilting and Brookshire’s grocery shopping on Friday.

Besides the scheduled activities, there are games, puzzles, quilting, “42” and visiting going on every day.

If there is an activity or outing you would like to see at the center, please feel free to make suggestions.

Come join us.

Beverly West from Crowley visited the center last week. She is a friend of Cora Harkins. It also happened to be Beverly’s birthday so she got “Happy Birthday,” a little off-key, sung to her.
