Glen Rose Optimist Club recently recognized Youth of the Month for October. High school students Samantha Montoya and Austin Gibson received the honor.
Gibson is in the top 10 percent of the Class of 2013, on the AB Honor Roll and is taking all advanced classes and Dual Credit AP Calculus.
He participates in football, basketball, baseball and track. Gibson was named Academic All-District in football, basketball and baseball. He received Honorable Mention in football, baseball and basketball and went to regional competition in track.
Leadership activities include membership in National Honor Society and Elevate Youth Group.
Gibson's community involvement includes logging many service hours for the National Honor Society and putting flags out for the Optimist Club.
Montoya is in the top 25 percent of the Class of 2013, has taken dual credit and advanced classes and will graduate with a distinguished diploma.
Her leadership activities include membership in National Honor Society, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), serving as class secretary during her her junior year and attendance at the Tobacco Leadership Conference and Workforce industry Training.
Montoya advanced to regionals in pole vault in her sophomore and junior years and was also named Basketball Academic All-District both years. She was basketball 2nd Team All-District her junior year.
On the community level, she is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Elevate Youth Ministry at StoneWater Church; and participates in Christmas in Action. She has volunteered in the school concession stands and helped with the local food bank, visited nursing home and has donated blood the last two years.
