The Glen Rose High School Optimist Youth of the Month for January were Stephanie Simpson and Daniel Groome.
Simpson is ranked 29th in the senior class with a 3.7 GPA. She is enrolled in dual English IV, dual college algebra, dual trigonometry, AP government, AP psychology and criminal justice. Simpson plans to attend Texas Weslyan University and major in psychology or political science.
Her achievements include winning regional honors in a news writing UIL competition her junior year.
Simpson’s leadership roles include being a member of FCCLA for three years and she served as a class representative in student council for four years. She was a writer for the school newspaper her junior year.
Simpson is an active participant in GRHS’s Environmental Science (river tests and promotes energy conservation). She interned with the Glen Rose Newspaper during the summer and attended several city council, commissioner’s court and school board meetings as part of her internship. She is an employee at Storiebook Café in Glen Rose.
Groome is enrolled in dual history, dual biology, AP world history, advanced algebra 2, algebra 1 and advanced pre-calculus. He has a GPA of 3.65 and has been on the “AB” honor roll for three years.
His achievements include being a member of National Honor Society, qualifying for regionals in track pole vault. In 2005, 2006 and 2007, Groome ranked fifth for pole vault in the state.
He is a T.A.A.F State Qualifier for pole vault, received a personal record at Regionals in 2008 at a height of 14’6” in pole vault.
Groome is a member of Future Leaders Organization (FLO), student council, S.A.D.D. and coached lower classmen in pole vault.
He participates in both the Relay for Life and 5k for Cancer.
Groome is going into the Marine Corp as a Private First Class.
