State Representative Dr. J.D. Sheffield (R-Gatesville), District 59, was sworn into office Thuesday.

Flanked by his wife Regina, supporters, and staff members, Sheffield took the oath of office alongside fellow members of the Texas House of Representatives. The 83rd session of the Legislature, which will run through late May, was called to order by recently appointed Texas Secretary of State John Steed.

Sheffield is one of 44 new legislators, the largest freshman class in decades.

“My campaign focused on supporting local, quality public education for our next generation of leaders and healthcare, particularly for rural Texans,” Sheffield said. “We are ready to get to work on behalf of District 59 and Texas.”

Sheffield is a family practice physician elected to the Texas Legislature in 2012. District 59 is comprised of eight counties - Comanche, Coryell, Erath, Hamilton, McCullough, Mills, San Saba,and Somervell.

During the opening day of the Legislature, Joe Straus, III, was elected to his third term as speaker. Rep. David Simpson dropped out of the speakers race prior to nominations and a floor vote.
