Three Glen Rose High School students are headed to the University Interscholastic League’s (UIL) state contests after finishing among the top places at the Region II Academic Meet.
Glen Rose was represented by 27 students who advanced from the district academic meet, held March 25 and 27 at Hillsboro High School. The Region meet, held at Texas A&M University-Commerce on Saturday, April 12, was the final competition before the state events, which will be held May 2-3 at the University of Texas-Austin.
Advancing in their respected academic events are senior Richard Freas, who placed second in the Literary Criticism event coached by Brian Sowell; junior Bailey Rogers, who placed third in Prose coached by Connie McCormick; and senior Shawn Horn, who placed fourth in Science and is coached by Doug Ogletree.
At the UIL district meet, GRHS captured this year’s Academic Sweepstakes award after their many top placings.
Results from this year’s district meet, include: Andrea Allen - 4th Prose, 5th News Writing, 4th Feature Writing and 5th Editorial Writing; Dillon Baker - 6th Computer Applications; Austin Brady - 1st Spelling & Vocabulary; Keri Carpenter - 6th Prose; Eliot Clerke - 3rd Current Events; and Lindsey Cook - 4th Number Sense, 4th Math and 4th Science.
Also placing at district were: Morgan Emerson - 4th Calculator Applications; Richard Freas - 3rd Ready Writing, 2nd Literary Criticism; Erin Howell - 6th Current Events; Andy Lounsberry - 2nd Poetry; Shalah Manning - 3rd Informative Speaking; Katherine McCravey - Lincoln Douglas; Haley Nettleton - 6th Ready Writing and 5th Literary Criticism; Graham Noell - 2nd Persuasive Speaking; Zac Phillips - 4th Spelling & Vocabulary; and Dustin Punches - 1st Ready Writing and 3rd Literary Criticism.
Additional GRHS placings at the UIL district meet, include: Remy Robertson - 2nd Current Events and 1st Prose; Jenoa Sandlin - 6th Literary Criticism; Joslyn Sandlin - 3rd Persuasive Speaking and 2nd Lincoln Douglas; Shawn Horn - 1st Number Sense, 3rd Math and 3rd Science; Stephanie Simpson - 2nd News Writing and 6th Feature Writing; Jamie Sparks - 6th Feature Writing; Kaytlin Wiseman - 1st Informative Speaking and 1st Calculator Applications; and Matthew Wiseman - 2nd Informative Speaking.
Team trophies were presented and brought home to Glen Rose in the following events: Spelling & Vocabulary, Math, Number Sense, Speech, Current Events, Calculator Applications and Literary Criticism.
